Hoop Dreams (2007) was an accidental collaboration between my husband, Stafford Smith and me. The music was originally written for another film maker, who chose not to use it for her film. I rewrote her score, but my mentor, William Duckworth, thought that the music was worth salvaging, and suggested that I "find another film to use it..."
Simultaneously, Stafford was working on a video project that involved Hula-Hoopers and a swinging motion, a study on the theories of Henri Lefevre's rhythmanalysis. The musical loops, along with the rocking motion of the volume control pedal seemed to be a perfect match– almost as if we had collaborated.
